180℃ Steam Hose – High Temperature & Pressure Resistant Hose

EPDM steam hoses are a type of flexible piping product made primarily of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber, specifically designed for transporting saturated steam at 180℃ and high-temperature hot water. The saturated pressure of 180℃ saturated steam is approximately 1.0 MPa, placing specific demands on the hose's temperature resistance, pressure resistance, and aging resistance. The saturated carbon chains of the EPDM molecular structure endow the material with excellent heat aging resistance and steam erosion resistance, making it a primary choice for the inner layer of steam hoses.

From a materials science perspective, EPDM's heat aging resistance stems from the chemical stability of its molecular chains. Compared to rubbers such as nitrile rubber and styrene-butadiene rubber, which contain unsaturated double bonds, EPDM's main chain is a saturated carbon chain, with only a small number of unsaturated double bonds in the side chains for vulcanization. This structural characteristic makes EPDM significantly more resistant to heat, oxygen, ozone, and ultraviolet radiation than general-purpose rubbers. Under continuous exposure to 180℃ saturated steam, the EPDM inner layer maintains stable physical properties for a considerable period, delaying aging phenomena such as hardening, cracking, and loss of elasticity.

II. Structural Design and Material Composition EPDM steam hoses employ a multi-layer composite structure, with each functional layer requiring stable performance under continuous exposure to high-temperature steam.

Inner Layer (Inner Rubber Layer): Primarily composed of EPDM, with a thickness typically between 2.0mm and 4.0mm. This inner layer directly contacts high-temperature steam and is the key layer determining the hose's temperature resistance. The ethylene content and type of the third monomer in EPDM affect its heat resistance and vulcanization rate. Higher ethylene content EPDM exhibits better heat resistance and higher tensile strength, but correspondingly lower low-temperature flexibility. The third monomer is typically ethylene-neobornene or dicyclopentadiene; ethylene-neobornene exhibits faster vulcanization and superior compression set. Appropriate amounts of antioxidants and anti-aging agents must be added to the inner layer rubber compound formulation to delay oxidative degradation under high-temperature conditions.

Reinforcing Layer: Employs a steel wire braided structure, typically one or two layers of high-strength steel wire braid. The braiding angle is controlled at approximately 54°44' to balance radial pressure resistance and axial flexibility. The steel wire is made of high-carbon steel with a tensile strength of not less than 1800MPa, and is copper- or zinc-plated to enhance adhesion to the rubber. The steel wire braided layer must withstand internal steam pressure while also resisting mechanical stress generated during bending and movement of the hose.

Outer Layer (Outer Rubber Layer): Primarily made of heat-resistant and wear-resistant synthetic rubber, typically EPDM or neoprene rubber. The outer layer must possess resistance to weathering, ozone, and mechanical abrasion. The heat aging resistance of the EPDM outer layer is consistent with the inner layer, allowing it to withstand long-term high-temperature environments. The outer layer surface usually has a marking strip along its length indicating product specifications, pressure rating, and temperature range.

End Connectors: Steam hose connectors typically employ a crimp-type or detachable structure. The connector material must possess high-temperature resistance, commonly carbon steel or stainless steel. The connection strength between the fitting and the pipe body must meet the requirement of not detaching or leaking under the design pressure.

III. Core Performance Parameters

Operating Temperature: 180℃ is the typical conveying temperature for saturated steam. The hose must maintain its rated operating pressure at this temperature without softening, swelling, or cracking of the inner rubber layer. Some products can withstand higher temperatures for short periods, but the continuous operating temperature is still designed based on 180℃.

Operating Pressure: The saturation pressure corresponding to 180℃ saturated steam is approximately 1.0 MPa. The rated operating pressure of steam hoses is typically designed from 1.0 MPa to 1.5 MPa, with a burst pressure of 3 to 4 times the operating pressure.

Inner Diameter Specifications: Common inner diameter specifications range from 13mm to 100mm, including 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch, and 3 inch. Smaller diameters are suitable for equipment heating and steam purging, while larger diameters are suitable for steam cleaning and material conveying.

Minimum Bending Radius: Related to the inner diameter and reinforcement layer structure, the minimum bending radius of steel wire braided reinforced steam hoses is typically between 5 and 8 times the pipe diameter.

Aging Resistance: The combination of the EPDM inner and outer layers gives the hose excellent aging resistance in high-temperature and high-humidity environments, delaying the performance degradation of the material under continuous steam exposure. High-quality EPDM steam hoses can be used continuously for thousands of hours at 180℃ with stable performance.

IV. Key Points for Steam Condition Adaptation

Steam Permeation and Condensation: When steam flows in the hose, some heat is lost through the pipe wall, which may cause steam condensation and the formation of condensate. Condensate accumulation at the low points of the hose may cause water hammer; pipeline layout and drainage measures should be considered during selection.

Thermal Expansion Compensation: After high-temperature steam is introduced, the steam hose will change length due to thermal expansion. The pipeline design should allow for thermal expansion to avoid excessive stretching or twisting of the hose due to constraints.

Frequent Hot and Cold Alternation: Some operating conditions require frequent use of steam hoses under alternating hot and cold conditions. Repeated thermal expansion and contraction accelerate the aging of rubber materials and the fatigue of the reinforcing layer. When selecting a product, attention should be paid to its heat cycle resistance performance.

Installation and Support: During installation, steam hoses should avoid excessive bending and twisting. Support spacing should be reasonably set according to the pipe diameter and medium temperature to prevent sagging or stress concentration due to the pipe's own weight and thermal deformation.
